Is this the best smartphone? Are you sure?

Seoul, Korea -
“Unlike what is shown in the commercial, when I put it in my inside pocket, it sags.”

Dell has revealed a five-inch tablet-type smartphone after four-inch and seven-inch models have already been on the market. Samsung Electronics’ seven-inch tablet computer, the Galaxy Tab, was publicized as being the right size to fit inside an inside pocket. Around the same time, Dell’s five-inch product came out and the Galaxy Tab was criticized as being inconvenient because of its weight and portability.

There were complaints that the pocket sagged when the seven-inch tablet was inserted in an inside pocket, though it was publicized as being pocket-friendly. As the five-inch product and the seven-inch product battle it out, the generally available four-inch products have taken hold of the industry and with dual-core CPUs are stepping up their competition to achieve higher speed. Pentech has come out with the Vega X; LG Electronics has introduced the Optimus 2X, and Samsung Electronics has announced Galaxy S2 through foreign news releases.
Now, the five-inch and seven-inch products which boasted size are losing their appeal. While the large screen is easy on the eyes for Web surfing and word processing while on the move, because of the cold weather, there were complaints of discomfort. The device just isn’t small enough to place inside a pocket and it’s difficult to take calls. One can use ear phones or headsets, but that is still inconvenient.

“You are a smartphone, or no, just a small phone.”
The smart phone industry is being muddied by speed and size competition, and small 2.5- and 3.2-inch products are finding their way into the market. Sony Ericsson has revealed the Xperia X10 Mini’s successor, the X10 Mini Pro, and HTC has come out with a smaller version of its Desire, called Desire Pop, to aim for the niche market. Samsung Electronics is also working on a Galaxy S mini product.
With their small screen and an overall size approximately half that of the four-inch products, they are attracting the interest of women. Because of this trend, there are different customer evaluations. The main inconvenience is the limited space for displaying content because of the small screen. The strong selling points of a smartphone, such as Web surfing and word processing, are almost impossible to enjoy with such small phones.
There are customer evaluations saying that the small screen has its merits and demerits. For example, Xperia X10 Mini Pro, with its QWERTY keyboard, is best for telephone calls and text messaging. It received reviews saying that it is in no way inferior to other smartphones in terms of photography, MP3, etc., with the exception of Internet applications such as Web surfing and text messaging.
“If you who need a smartphone, now may not be the right time. Wait a little longer.”

The trend in the mobile industry for the year 2011is fast processing speed, rather than large or small screens and overall sizes. This trend started with Pentech’s Vega X, with its DDR2 memory, and continued with LG Electronics’ dual-core smartphone, the Optimus 2X. The Optimus 2X will be released on the 25th and Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy S successor is planned to be announced.
A date to watch for is February 11, when MWC2011 (Mobile World Conference 2011), the largest mobile communication exhibition, will be held. The pending announcement of Apple’s iPhone 5 is also attracting attention. The biggest expectation is for increased processing speed compared to the previous models.
The trend toward mini-smartphones is also receiving much interest. While the demand for phones with practical functions is endless in an industry full of high performance and large-screen phones, products such as those of Sony Ericsson and HTC are also in the spotlight.
